Coarsening with MeshLab
   -> Filters -> remeshing -> quadratic edge collapse decimation 
   -> specify target face number, e.g. 6500
Surface split with Blender:
   -> new scene
   (-> delete the cube)
   -> import stl
   -> select the stl (right mouse in 3D window)
   -> at bottom switch from object mode to edit mode
   -> activate "select faces" button at bottom
   -> at bottom from select menue, use "select circle" or "select boundary"
      (select faces for surface part)
   -> press "p" 
      (froms selection, this creates a new object with the selected faces, they are removed from the old)
   -> repeat as necessary
   -> select (sub) object, file->export->stl for each (sub) object
